"Athletics" is the collective term for all running, jumping, throwing disciplines and is considered the core Olympic sport.
"Athletics" is, unlike for example Winter sports (bobsled, biathlon, ski jumping) or sports with complex and expensive Facilities (horse riding, sailing), to be operated anywhere in the world.
